The 36th Inaugural Lecture of the Niger Delta University took place on April 17, 2019 at the University's Main Auditorium. Speaking on the topic "Viruses: Ignored, Neglected, Poorly Understood with Resulting Devastating Consequences", the Guest Lecturer, Kemebradikumo D Pondei, a professor of Medical Microbiology (Virology) at the College of Health Sciences , explained the seriousness of the threat of viruses. Viruses, he said are troublesome non-cellular organisms; they present many diagnostics and treatment challenges; are fatal and deadly as they invade and destroy cells in the body and is a major cause of most public health crises and hazards such as the Spanish Flu (after the 1st World War that claimed about 10% of the World Population by then) and recent outbreaks like Monkey Pox, Zika, Lassa Fever, Bird Flu, Rabies, Polio, Mumps, Measles, Yellow Fever, Ebola and even many cancers, just to mention a few.
