NDU DON Advocates Bloom's Taxonomy for National Development
A
professor of Educational Management at the Niger Delta University, Prof Allen
Agih, has advocated for the rigorous implementation of Bloom's Taxonomy in our
educational system (particularly at the foundation stages) to achieve the total
development of the personality that would form the basis for national
development. While all the three pillars of training the child's personality
(cognitive, psychomotor and affective) are important he said, the affective
domain, according to the erudite scholar is the most critical and important of
them all; and regrettably the most neglected component. Quoting profusely from
Greek and Roman philosophers, scientists, psychologists, motivational authors
and from the Bible he posited the importance of courage, motivation,
encouragement, desire, goal setting, loving mentorship (all indicators of the
affective domain) as the fuel for total development of the integrated
personality. He lamented the tear-down, negative criticisms, attacks, and
negative labelling tactics that characterize current learning and work
environments as anti-productive, as it actually de-motivates and de-moralizes.
He hinged most of society's social problems and psychosomatic diseases as a
result of underdevelopment of the affective component of the personality. The
learned Professor made these remarks in a lecture entitled "Bloom's Taxonomy
Revisited" the 34th in the Inaugural
Lecture Series of the Niger Delta University, held at the University
Auditorium on February 20, 2019. The well attended lecture was chaired by the
Vice Chancellor Prof Samuel G Edoumiekumo, Principal Officers, Deans of
Faculties, Directors , amongst others.
